Dentures and Partials in Franklin, MI

Complete dentures, also known as full dentures, replace the upper and lower tooth arches. Partial dentures replace multiple rows of teeth in different areas of the smile. Traditional dentures are removable and lay on the gums. These dentures typically use adhesive to stay in place and require soaking in denture cleaners.

Implant-secured dentures and partials offer longer-lasting treatment because implants provide stability at the tooth root. We will not use implants to replace every single tooth.

However, multiple implants can secure arches or rows of teeth to create a more stable bite. In addition, with implant-supported dentures, patients have fewer dietary restrictions against hard or crunchy foods and do not need to use adhesive for their restorations to stay in place.

Treatment with Dentures

For traditional dentures, Dr. Shayota will first take dental impressions of the teeth for the denture. Then, she sends these impressions to a dental lab that creates custom dentures that match the shade and contour of natural teeth. The dentures can also match any remaining teeth for a seamless look.

Implant-secured dentures may require more treatment time, but they can last longer than traditional dentures. Dr. Shayota works with local oral surgeons to provide dental implants for our patients.

If you choose implant-secured dentures, Dr. Shayota must ensure that you have good oral health and enough bone tissue to support implants. She may recommend bone grafting as needed to prepare for treatment.

Then, an oral surgeon will place the implants in the jawbone beneath the gum tissue. Over three to six months, the implants fuse with the jaw bone to provide a stable foundation for the dentures. Next, Dr. Shayota will take impressions of the healing implants for the final denture. Once the implants are fully healed, Dr. Shayota will place the denture.

Frequently Asked Questions

We will answer some of the most commonly asked questions concerning dentures and partials.

Will I have trouble speaking with new dentures?

Initially, you might find speaking a bit challenging with new dentures. Your mouth needs time to adjust to them, which can affect your speech. Practicing by reading aloud or talking with friends can help you adapt more quickly.

How many teeth do you need for a partial denture?

You don’t need a specific number of missing teeth for a partial denture. Partials can replace one or several missing teeth, filling in gaps between your remaining natural teeth. Dr. Shayota will design a partial denture tailored to your unique situation.

What happens if I don’t wear my partial dentures all the time?

If you don’t wear partial dentures consistently, your remaining teeth may shift into the empty spaces. This can lead to bite problems and make your dentures fit poorly over time. Regular use helps maintain proper alignment and ensures your dentures remain comfortable.

How soon after extraction can I get dentures?

You can often receive immediate dentures on the same day as your tooth extraction. These temporary dentures help you maintain function and appearance while your gums heal. After healing, which usually takes a few months, you’ll get your permanent dentures adjusted for a perfect fit.

Can you fix an underbite with dentures?

Dentures alone typically can’t correct an underbite. An underbite involves the positioning of your jawbones, which dentures can’t alter. Other treatments like orthodontics or surgery might be necessary to address an underbite effectively.

What happens if you fall asleep with partial dentures?

Sleeping with partial dentures isn’t recommended. Removing them at night allows your gums to rest and reduces the risk of infections. It also helps prevent damage to your dentures from grinding or clenching during sleep.
